Tourists visiting the German capital may collaborate with their residents in the cleaning of city parks, with a new project initiated by two city district offices and a guided tour company.
Rona Tietje, councilor for economics in the Pankow neighborhood, sees the project as a good opportunity to “sensitize people about sustainable tourism,” he told DPA today.
An employee of the company that offers urban tours to tourists has explained that similar activities have been well received in other European cities such as Edinburgh, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Dublin.
He also explained that experience had shown that participants appreciated “the experience of feeling part of the city.”
The organizers planned three dates, in August and September, when those interested will clean the Mauerpark (Park of the Wall, alluding to the Berlin Wall) and the Ernst Thälmann Park.
Before the cleaning activities, a free one-hour tour of the Berlin Wall Memorial will be offered and a picnic will be offered later.
