Tourism in Germany reaches a new record in 2018, with 4% more overnight stays

Tourism in Germany registered a new record for the ninth year in a row, with a total of 477.6 million overnight stays by both national and international tourists, 4% more than in 2017, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destadis).

The number of overnight stays for foreign visitors increased by 5% to 87.7 million in 2018, while that of domestic tourists increased by 4% to 389.9 million.

These statistics are based on data from establishments with more than ten beds. According to representatives of the German tourism industry, Germany is the most popular destination for national travelers who, “thanks to low unemployment”, feel the desire to travel.

“Also this year, more trips and more expenses are planned,” said tourism expert Martin Lohmann with a view to the results of a study carried out by the Tourism and Travel Research Association (FUR).
