Tourism asks «not to dramatize» about «specific» episodes of insecurity in Barcelona

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism considers that the episodes of insecurity that are happening in Barcelona are a «punctual» issue on which to take precautions and should not be repeated in any destination, and calls for «not to dramatize or exaggerate disproportionately «, because security is one of the pillars of the tourist offer in Spain.

«We are concerned, because security is one of the competitive advantages of Spain, along with hospitality and tourism and product offerings, so our will is to guarantee that security and we are collaborating in this case with the City Council of Barcelona, »said the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce in operation, Reyes Maroto

To questions from journalists, Maroto recalled that the Ministry of Interior every summer reinforces the police presence in many autonomous communities, especially in the most tourist areas, thanks to the Summer Plan that is launched every year, and «very effectively «.

On this summer’s strikes, Maroto has acknowledged that at this time in which more volume of passengers moves «they are habitual and do not fly by surprise», but has indicated that agreements should be sought through mediation that allow their recall and , if this is not possible, the minimum services that guarantee mobility will be established.

As for the evolution of the summer, it has affected that the data of the tourist season are good in general terms, although there is a difference between urban destinations and those of ‘sun and beach’, where the model suffers and They require investments.

In this line, he recalled that the Budgets for 2019 – which were not approved – contemplated investments of 22 million euros in mature destinations that could not reach the autonomous communities, so he wanted to end the blocking situation with a government in functions that allows to undertake them.

Maroto, who held a meeting in Barajas with journalists on the occasion of the inaugural route of Air Europa to Iguazu, also referred to the decline in tourist arrivals in the Canary Islands, especially from the British and German markets, taking into account the ‘Brexit’ and the context of economic recession in Germany, and the measures undertaken at this juncture.

Specifically, he said that the loyalty campaign aimed at the British visitor has had «very good results», to which is added the search for other markets to alleviate the fall in their case, if any, of these important markets.

In the case of Germany, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Oliver, has pointed out that regular contacts are maintained with the operators and monitor the situation. However, it has highlighted the increase in both visitors and expenses incurred recorded in the first half.

«Of course we are attentive and we work mainly with the autonomous communities the offer and promotion plans to attract a tourist profile with more spending capacity. It is true that if the prospects of recession are met this issue along with the ‘Brexit’ , is an issue that can affect, but we are prepared for what may happen, «he stressed.

Oliver has also attributed to the recovery of destinations such as Turkey and North Africa the redistribution of tourist flows to Spain, with lower arrivals from some markets, which have been compensated with the rise of tourists from the US, Portugal, France and China .
