The Costa del Sol reduces tourist seasonality by three points in the last five years

The Costa del Sol has reduced tourist seasonality by three points in the last five years by lowering the concentration of travelers staying in tourist establishments from 47.8% in 2012 to 44.8% that was obtained last year.

This follows from a report that analyzes the seasonality of tourism and its evolution in the province of Malaga in the period of the years 2005-2017, prepared by Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol.

This analysis reflects that 2012 was the turning point to reduce tourist seasonality by reducing by almost three points the concentration of travelers staying in hotel establishments during June, July, August and September and with growth in most of the months of year, mainly in April, November and June.

This decrease is also confirmed when analyzing the entry of passengers at the airport of Malaga-Costa del Sol, where there is a decrease of two points in the concentration of arrivals in the summer months in the period 2012-2017, have indicated from the Diputación in a statement.

When analyzing the arrival of travelers in hotels in June, July, August and September accumulated in the period 2005-2017, the report reveals that from 2006 to 2012 the concentration of tourist arrivals on the Costa del Sol in the months of summer, going from 45.3% registered in 2005 to 47.8% in 2012, which was the summer “that hosted the highest concentration of arrivals” in the period analyzed, while in the period 2012-2017 it goes from that 47 , 8% to 44.8% registered between June and September of last year.

The president of Tourism Costa del Sol, Elías Bendodo, explained that this evolution “supports the strategy of segmentation of the offer that we started in 2011 and that has allowed us to attract tourists with greater spending capacity per person per day and sell than the Costa del Sol is open 365 days a year thanks to the amount of tourism resources that we have besides the weather “.

Bendodo added that it should also be noted that the “creation, enhancement and promotion of inland tourism with projects such as Gran Senda or Caminito del Rey have served as powerful claims to attract tourists out of the high season and diversify the offer of a destination with a marked accent of tourism linked to the sun and the beach “.

Thus, he recalled that “one of the priorities of Tourism Costa del Sol has been to combat the tourist seasonality as it has a negative influence on the destination by causing economic and social distortions such as temporary employment, the flight of potential demand, decrease in income and, above all, the overload of public services and infrastructure in the summer months “.

In this sense, the report analyzes the behavior of different markets and concludes that in the national market the concentration of tourists in summer intensifies from 2005 to 2012, going from 48.6% in 2005 to 51.6% in summer concentration in 2012 .

However, in the last six years the trend of entry of Spanish travelers staying in hotels on the Costa del Sol is reversed significantly decreasing the seasonality of the national market, with a reduction of more than six points to stand at 45, 2% in 2017.

As for the British market it is observed that in the period between 2005 and 2012 the concentration of British tourists grows in five points in the summer months and that it is also from 2012 when this concentration is moderate and it is reduced by 1.4 points, according to the data of the report that also analyzes the flow of arrivals of travelers to the airport of Malaga-Costa del Sol.

The behavior of the German market differs from the British market since the months of greatest concentration of German travelers occurs in October, September and May, resulting in a decrease of 2.1 points in the concentration of tourists in the period from 2012 to 2017.

Finally, the seasonality of the Nordic market, which includes Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, reduces its airport arrivals from June to September in the 2012-2017 period by one point, although Nordic travelers concentrate their trips. on the Costa del Sol mainly in October, July and April.

When analyzing the data of the seasonal evolution of the travelers staying in the hotels of competing destinations with the Costa del Sol such as Alicante, Baleares, Girona or Santa Cruz de Tenerife it is proven that the province of Malaga is the second destination that suffers the least tourist seasonality after Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
