The Carnival of Santa Cruz beats record with 400,000 people in the quadrilateral area

Santa Cruz de Tenerife has lived in the last hours a Carnival Piñata that overflowed all the forecasts of the organization in terms of public affluence. The second Carnival of the Day of the year and the nighttime dances of the Piñata were fused in the same festive day, with more than fifty performances in 18 uninterrupted hours of music and dance.

The audience movement in the Carnival quadrilateral was around 400,000 people, from morning to night, according to local police data. In the time slot from 7 o’clock in the morning to 7 o’clock in the afternoon, the entrance of vehicles was 18,332 more than the previous Saturday. This increase in traffic and the retentions at the entrance to Santa Cruz forced a redoubling of efforts to regulate traffic at the entrances to the capital.

This circumstance became especially evident hours before the concert offered by the Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra and 4.40 in the coastal space of the city, preceded by the Cuban band Orishas. The crowd ended up cramming the entire area between Avenida Francisco La Roche, the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena and Plaza de España, as well as adjacent streets such as La Marina, Villalba Hervás and Emilio Calzadilla.

From midday, when the program of activities organized by the City Council began, through the Autonomous Party Organization, the influx of people was constant around the scenarios installed in the squares of the Candelaria and Prince and Avenue Francisco La Roche.

At 11 o’clock in the morning, in the Plaza del Príncipe, the Ni-Fi-Ni Fá Afilarmónica and the opera group La Zarzuela perform, while the Francisco La Roche avenue hosts the exhibition of Antique Cars, which will tour the streets of the city at noon. capital, with its occupants dressed in costumes of the time.

In the afternoon, the Círculo de Amistad XII de Enero celebrates its characteristic end of the festival, with performances by Carnival groups, which will also tour the streets of the ring, starting at 6:00 pm, to converge on Francisco La Roche Avenue. Later, at around 8:00 pm, the motif that will preside over the Carnival 2020 will be announced on the stage of the Plaza de la Candelaria, chosen over the internet, whose big dates will be between Friday, February 21 and Sunday. March 1st.

The announcement will coincide with the closing dance of Carnival 2019, in charge of the Dominican Combo Orchestra, which will have as a pin the traditional pyrotechnic exhibition in the coastal area of ​​the capital.


The municipal cleaning services, which during the Carnival have deployed an extraordinary operation, with more than 200 operators and fifty vehicles, will strengthen from tomorrow, Monday 11, their performances in the busiest areas of the capital.

Until the celebration of the Burial of the Sardine, this special operation of the Carnival had been settled with the withdrawal of 210.3 tons of waste, which was a considerable reduction compared to the 241.9 tons collected in the same period of the previous year.

For the second consecutive year, the Consistory has undertaken an awareness campaign on cleaning and collection of light packaging, supported by Ecoembes, in order to sensitize the public on the importance of depositing the waste in the corresponding containers, in addition to separating them correctly. .


During the last night, 112 people were assisted by the preventive device organized around the Carnival Hospital. As usual, alcohol poisoning accounted for the main cause (35 percent of the total), as well as trauma and falls, so 23 people were assisted; 17 cases were classified as aggressions.

The first-aid post in the Plaza de España, in charge of the group of volunteers of Civil Protection, attended 29 people, in almost all cases for mild conditions.

In the Day Carnival, 68 attentions were quantified, one third of them due to the effects of alcohol intoxications. Four patients had to be transferred to hospital centers for specific treatments or radiological tests.
