From 15 to 21 July the Balearic island will host the 4th edition of the Menorca Film Festival that will have as a special guest to Malta
Biosphere Reserve, sports island … and also a movie island! Menorca turns to the seventh art and opens some of its public spaces -such as the square of the Cathedral of Ciutadella, the patio of the church of Sant Francesc in Maó, or the King’s Island- to give visibility to a film festival that , in its 4th edition, pays homage to the thousands of islands scattered around the world. They will be the protagonists of shorts, feature films, professional conferences to talk about sustainability in the cinema or the impact of festivals, and parallel activities of music, video clips and exhibitions. Lights Camera action!
To its countless natural attractions (more than a hundred beaches or a natural park, s’Albufera des Grau), sports (horse riding, hiking and all kinds of water activities), cultural (such as the Talayotic route) or gastronomic, Menorca adds a new incentive for those who visit it from July 15 to 21: the Menorca Film Festival.
For a week, Menorca will become the ‘island of cinema’, hosting this event dedicated to the seventh art, which, in its 4th edition, has as its protagonists the thousands of islands that, like it, are distributed as small points on the world map . Short films and feature films that tell stories that occur in these small pieces of land scattered by seas and oceans. Emotion, nostalgia and survival integrated into the film archipelago.
Menorca will convert public spaces of reference in the island, like the square of the Cathedral of Ciutadella, the patio of the church of Sant Francesc in Maó or the island of the King, in the middle of the second largest natural harbor in the world (after the North American Pearl Harbor), in improvised open-air cinemas for magical and unforgettable Menorcan evenings. Other spaces in which the festival will be screened are, in Maó, the Cinemas Ocimax; and in Ciutadella, La Margarete and the Canal Salat cinemas. The Sala La Caixa, in Maó, will serve as a point of information and ticket sales, which can also be purchased through the festival website.
In this edition the island of Malta will be invited as guest, with four short films and a feature film (‘Simshar’, about a quiet fishing village that lives in conflict with the arrival of immigrants) belonging to the Valetta Film Festival.
There will also be professional days open to the public in which high-level professionals will discuss different topics. One of them will be a round table on ‘Cinema and Sustainability’, on Thursday 18, from 10 o’clock in the morning, at the Museum of Menorca, which will have the participation, among others, of the actor Sergi López and the director Miguel Ángel Tobias, who will explain how he managed to make a 100% sustainable film, ‘El secreto de Ibgosim’. And the journalist Mercedes Milà will present the chapter 4 of ‘Scott and Milà’ (MoviStar +), already in the patio of Sant Francesc. The second professional day will be dedicated to everything that surrounds the organization of a film festival and what it means for the territory that hosts it.
The Menorca Film Festival will also feature parallel activities, such as video clip sessions (with the collaboration of Mecal), a Concert of Sound Bands at the Teatro Principal de Maó on Sunday 21, the exhibitions’ La mar de plástico ‘and’ Georges Mélies y the cinema of 1900 ‘, or a musical party in the Paput Burguers & Coctails (Maó), on Tuesday, the 16th, at 22:00 hours. And for the children’s audience, a section of short films and the performances of the companies Teatre de Xoc (Maó) and S’Espai de Circ (Ciutadella).
