India decrees the confinement of its 1.3 billion inhabitants to curb the coronavirus

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has announced that from today and for three weeks a «total» confinement will rule to contain the expansion of the coronavirus, which implies the largest closure of this type worldwide, affecting 1,300 millions of people.

«Forget about leaving home in the next 21 days,» Modi announced in a speech to the nation in which he defended the measure to «save India,» as reported by the NDTV network. «21 days may seem like a lot, but it is the only way to guarantee that everyone is safe,» he explained.

Modi has also called for keeping distances, as it is not «just for patients». «Social distancing is the only way to fight the virus. It is for all citizens, all families, even the Prime Minister»; has added.

In this sense, he noted that «a single infected person can spread to hundreds in weeks,» since the virus «spreads like fire.» Indian authorities have so far confirmed more than 500 cases, including nine deaths.

The head of the Indian Government has stressed that, during this period of confinement, basic supplies will be guaranteed and that more resources will be allocated to strengthening the health system. In the last week, blockades have already been applied in large cities and transportation has been suspended.
