Calvet aims to strengthen the connections with Asia and “exploit the centrality of Barcelona”
Etihad Airways inaugurated on Wednesday a new route between Barcelona Airport and Abu Dhabi that will be operated initially five times a week by an Airbus A330-200, before starting to operate daily as of March 31, 2019.
The Minister of Territory and Sustainability, Damià Calvet, has opted to strengthen connections with Asia and “exploit the centrality of Barcelona” with direct flights between the city and the continent, the Generalitat said in a statement.
Calvet has described Asia as a priority because it opens up new opportunities for Catalonia’s economy and tourism: “Asia is the factory of the world, a growing economy that interests us a lot”.
“From the Generalitat and from the Committee of Desenvolupament de Rutes Aèries (CDRA) we work to achieve when more direct flights better and create an offer of direct flights with four and a half million indirect intercontinental flights,” he asserted.
The CDRA, made up of Aena, the Barcelona City Council, the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona and the Generalitat, has given its support to the creation of this route “from the first moment”.
