The platform takes this measure after the shooting at an unauthorized party at a platform accommodation in Toronto where three young people died
The Airbnb vacation rental platform has begun to restrict some reservations for children under 25 in Canada in an effort to prevent so-called ‘party houses’ from becoming a spiral of violence.
Airbnb has taken this step after the shooting at an unauthorized party at a platform accommodation in Toronto where three young people died.
This is a pilot program that is currently being carried out in Canada, where the rental group is preventing people under 25 from reserving an entire property, of any size, in their local area.
According to ‘Financial Times’, the company did not want to specify whether it plans to extend the age restrictions to other markets. However, from the platform they have stressed that it is a pilot program and that the restriction does not prevent children under 25 from reserving houses in more remote places.
In addition, some users may be exempt from the restrictions if they had an «established history of positive reviews.»
The launch of the program is motivated as a response measure after a shooting in a Toronto Airbnb reserve last week in which three people died, one of them apparently from suicide, according to police. In October, five people were killed at a party at an Airbnb location in Orinda, near San Francisco.
«Airbnb will continue to deploy additional security measures to further strengthen the platform in Canada and around the world,» the company said.
